Pandora's Box
According to ancient Greek mythology Pandora was the first woman on earth. Zeus ordered Hephaestus, the god of craftsmanship, to create her and he did so by using earth and water. The gods gave her many gifts such as speech, clothes, and beauty.
In the early days of the Olympian Gods, Zeus, Lord of the Gods, jealously guarded his secrets. He had ordered his cousins, the Titans, Epimetheus and Prometheus, to bring gifts to all of the animals on Earth. When he got to Man, Epimetheus found he had nothing left. His brother Prometheus, who had the gift of foresight, stole fire from the Gods by tricking Zeus and smuggling fire away from him inside the hollow stalk of a fennel plant. Prometheus then gave fire to Man, and warned Epimetheus not to accept any “gift” from the Gods, as it would be a trick.
After Prometheus stole fire from Mount Olympus, Zeus sought revenge by handing Pandora to Epimetheus, Prometheus’ brother. At the same time, Pandora was given a jar that she was ordered not to open under any circumstances. Overcome by curiosity, given to her by the gods, Pandora opened the jar. Upon doing so, the evils contained within the box escaped into the world. Scared, Pandora immediately closed the jar, only to trap Hope inside.
